Who this helps

People building a retirement fund, approaching an exit from work or coordinating the records and cash needs of an older family member.

Separate accumulation from withdrawals

Before retirement, the question is how much can be contributed and for how long. During retirement, the question becomes when cash is needed and which assets can meet it. Separate predictable expenses, irregular healthcare or family costs and money needed soon. A long-horizon investment should not be treated as the same resource as immediately accessible cash.

Make the assumptions visible

Use today’s spending, years to retirement, a selected retirement period, inflation, existing assets and pension assumptions. Test a longer retirement, higher expenses and lower assumed growth. Our calculator models selected inputs; it cannot know future market paths, healthcare events, tax or lifespan. NPS annuity capital and any estimated annuity payment must be read as different measures, not added as two capital benefits.

Connect the estimate with records and review

Keep pension statements, investment ownership and nominee records alongside the goal. Identify which amount is earmarked for another purpose before counting it toward retirement. Prasar can facilitate mutual fund participation and review conversations within its distribution role, and coordinate personal tax or legal questions with independent professionals. Confirm any product and professional costs separately.

How the process works

  1. Describe. Separate essential spending, optional spending and irregular commitments.
  2. Model. Compare retirement dates, inflation, income and longevity assumptions.
  3. Organise. Reconcile the assets, pensions and liabilities earmarked for retirement.
  4. Revisit. Update the assumptions and contribution discussion as life changes.

What to prepare

  • Current household spending and significant irregular costs
  • Pension estimates and retirement benefits, with dates
  • Existing investment balances and ownership details
  • Expected retirement timing, dependants and loan commitments

Start with a brief summary. Agree the information, access permissions and secure handoff before sharing sensitive documents. Confirm the scope, responsibilities and any separate professional fees before proceeding.

A practical example

A household spends INR 50,000 monthly today and expects to retire in ten years. At a selected 6% annual inflation assumption that spending becomes about INR 89,542 a month. This is a spending estimate, not a return or pension promise. The next step is to compare pension income, existing assets and a range of retirement lengths.

Common questions

Is the calculated corpus enough for life?

The model funds a selected period under entered assumptions. Longevity, healthcare, markets, tax and actual spending can change the need. Test alternatives and review periodically.

Does an SWP provide assured income?

No. It schedules redemptions, which may use your own capital. The return path, withdrawal level and costs affect how long the fund lasts.

Does NPS cover the whole retirement plan?

It may be one component. Access rules, actual exit requirements and provider annuity terms must be checked separately, along with liquidity outside NPS.
