A withdrawal plan uses your own capital
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan arranges periodic redemptions from an investment. The payment is not automatically interest, income earned during that month or a return guaranteed by the fund. It can include a return of capital. The remaining units continue to face the risks of the underlying investment. A constant monthly payment therefore needs to be considered alongside the changing balance, future spending needs and other sources of income. A regular instruction should never be mistaken for a pension guarantee.
Understand the order of each month
For an end-of-month withdrawal, this model applies growth before deducting the scheduled amount. For a beginning-month withdrawal, the deduction occurs first. That difference changes the capital exposed to growth for the month. The calculation limits a payment to the available balance and identifies the first month in which the scheduled amount cannot be fully met or the corpus reaches zero. A final partial withdrawal should not be described as a full month of income.
Allow spending to change
An unchanged rupee withdrawal can lose purchasing power. The optional annual increase raises the scheduled payment after each twelve-month period. This can increase pressure on the corpus even when the growth assumption is unchanged. Test several increases and consider which expenses are essential and which can be flexible. An annual national inflation reading is context, not a forecast of a retiree’s healthcare, rent or care costs. A household spending review remains necessary.
Look beyond the average return
The order of actual market returns matters when money is being withdrawn. An early loss followed by redemptions leaves fewer units available for a later recovery. This sequence effect is not shown by a constant-rate projection. A favourable average return does not establish that every intermediate payment can be met. Consider a separate accessible reserve and discuss the appropriate underlying exposure. Where market-linked assets fund essential spending, the consequences of a difficult early period deserve particular attention.
Keep the payout route operational
Review the registered bank account, mandate, contact details, nomination records and provider requirements. Confirm how a bank change, residency change or failed payment is handled. The dated source fact card about unclaimed mutual fund amounts is a reminder about records; it is not a measurement of SWP usage. A family member should be able to locate the investment and official service contact without needing another person’s password or OTP. Access and legal authority should follow the institution’s process.
Make the review more useful than a balance check
Compare actual withdrawals and the remaining capital with the planning record. If the balance is falling faster than expected, revisit the payment, spending flexibility, horizon and investment risk. Raising the assumed return is not a repair. Record any change and verify the first revised instruction. Where taxation, suitability or succession questions arise, seek the relevant professional input. An online projection can organise those questions but cannot settle them for an individual household.
A worked example
With zero return, an INR 12 lakh corpus and INR 10,000 monthly withdrawal funds 120 full payments. A higher withdrawal or annual increase shortens that period. Market-linked returns and their sequence can change the actual experience.
How to use the calculator and PDF
Open the SWP Calculator and enter values that match your actual question. Read the labels and units before adjusting a number. The result, chart and schedule use one shared calculation engine. Change one assumption at a time so the effect remains understandable. Check the methodology notes and save a report only after confirming the inputs. The optional name and purpose label personalise the document; they are not required to use the tool. Keep the report with the source records and revisit it when the facts or goal change.
Formula and assumptions
A month-end withdrawal model applies monthly growth first, then deducts the smaller of the scheduled withdrawal and available balance. Annual increases change the scheduled withdrawal after each twelve months.
