Start with the scheme rules and the planning question

Public Provident Fund is governed by a specific government scheme. A growth calculator is useful for examining contributions and interest, but it cannot establish an individual’s account eligibility, tax deduction or exact maturity date. The published annual deposit conditions and the provider’s processing rules still apply. Decide whether the question is how much a contribution pattern might accumulate or whether money will actually be accessible on a particular date; those are different questions.

Why the deposit date matters

The timing of a deposit affects the monthly balance eligible for interest under the scheme. This model distinguishes an amount credited by the fifth from one credited later. It treats annual contributions as an April payment and monthly contributions as twelve equal instalments. The day an instruction is sent may differ from the date the provider credits it. Leave sufficient processing time and check the account record instead of assuming that a last-minute transfer necessarily qualifies for that month.

Understand the financial-year model

Interest is accumulated on eligible balances and credited at financial year-end in the illustration. An opening balance can earn interest through the year, while new contributions have different eligible months depending on their timing. Equal monthly instalments are not economically identical to placing the whole annual total early in April. The yearly table separates deposits from interest so the difference is visible. It does not include an opening-year partial period or calculate a legal maturity date.

A current rate is not a fifteen-year guarantee

The official rate card identifies the published period and the date it was checked. The projection then uses one user-selected rate across the horizon. That is a simplifying assumption, not a forecast of future notified rates. Change the rate to see how sensitive the result is. If using a report for a future review, preserve the assumption and the dated source. Do not label the resulting full-term interest as assured by the current quarterly notification.

Keep access and annual limits separate from growth

A large projected balance does not mean the entire amount is freely withdrawable at any time. Account age, permitted withdrawals, extensions, loans and other conditions require the applicable official rules. The input limits here are a check on the stated contribution model, not an approval of a person’s aggregate eligibility across linked accounts. Where a minor’s account or tax treatment is involved, obtain appropriate professional clarification rather than relying on a simple growth chart.

Maintain a usable contribution record

Keep financial-year deposits, provider acknowledgements, current contact details and the location of account documents together. Review nomination and maturity-related instructions through the institution’s actual process. When the purpose is a retirement or education goal, compare the account timeline with the spending date as well as the projected amount. The strongest use of the calculator is a documented comparison of timing and contribution assumptions, followed by confirmation of the real account’s rules and records.

A worked example

With an assumed 7.1% rate, INR 1,50,000 deposited by 5 April earns an illustrative INR 10,650 for that financial year. The same deposit after 5 April earns eleven months of first-year interest in this simplified model.

How to use the calculator and PDF

Open the PPF Calculator and enter values that match your actual question. Read the labels and units before adjusting a number. The result, chart and schedule use one shared calculation engine. Change one assumption at a time so the effect remains understandable. Check the methodology notes and save a report only after confirming the inputs. The optional name and purpose label personalise the document; they are not required to use the tool. Keep the report with the source records and revisit it when the facts or goal change.

Formula and assumptions

Interest is modelled on eligible monthly balances and credited at financial year-end. Monthly equal deposits receive a different weighted first-year contribution than one early-April deposit.

Follow the original Indian Bank — Government small-savings rate table reference for the scope of the fact card and current official information. A source date is not evidence that every future assumption will hold. Read the Prasar Trust Centre for the distribution scope and editorial standards for attribution and corrections.

PPF rates can change. A fixed rate across the selected horizon is hypothetical. This model excludes opening-year maturity-date rules, withdrawals, loans and eligibility. Check official scheme terms; a projection is not confirmation of maturity or account entitlement.
