Separate the deposit from the interest option

A fixed deposit generally involves placing an amount with a provider for a specified term under stated conditions. A cumulative option reinvests interest, while a payout option distributes it periodically. These create different cash flows. A calculator must distinguish the principal returned at maturity from interest paid earlier; adding payouts to a maturity balance without explaining the distinction can make the result look larger than the amount available on the final date.

Use the actual quoted rate

Enter the rate for the provider, duration and option you are considering. Do not assume that one bank’s rate applies to another, or that a rate displayed for a different customer category applies to you. The input is not a live offer feed. Save the quote and its date for a real comparison. Check whether the provider uses a particular compounding frequency, day-count convention, minimum period or special conditions that change the calculation.

Read the cumulative illustration

The cumulative model compounds at the selected frequency. A quarterly choice credits growth differently from an annual choice, even when the displayed nominal annual rate is the same. For a term that is not an exact number of compounding periods, this tool uses a fractional-period mathematical model. A bank may calculate an incomplete period using daily or simple-interest conventions and apply its own rounding. The result is therefore an estimate to compare with the provider’s actual maturity quotation.

Treat payouts as a separate stream

The payout option estimates undiscounted simple interest without reinvesting it. A real monthly payout may be discounted according to the bank’s method. The monthly-equivalent number is not a certified payment promise. If the intention is regular household income, map the payout dates to expenses and consider what happens when the deposit matures. Keep principal and cash already received separate in the asset register so the same money is not counted twice.

Keep tax and access questions visible

The displayed result is before tax and TDS. The amount deducted and the final tax position are different questions and depend on applicable rules and circumstances. Premature closure can change interest or introduce penalties. Check provider terms, ownership, nomination and the relevant deposit-protection arrangements rather than assuming that every product called a deposit has identical treatment. Obtain qualified advice for personal tax or legal questions instead of relying on the projected gross interest.

Use the unclaimed-deposit fact carefully

The fact card reports an official public-sector-bank unclaimed-deposit figure with its stated date. It covers several account types and is not an FD-only total or the amount across all banks. Its practical message here is record maintenance. Keep deposit receipts, maturity instructions, registered contacts and nominee-status confirmations findable. After a move or family event, check the provider’s records. An accurate register reduces the risk that an otherwise straightforward deposit is forgotten or difficult to trace.

A worked example

At a hypothetical 7% compounded quarterly, INR 1 lakh for one year becomes about INR 1,07,186 before tax. A bank’s monthly payout may be discounted and its day-count or rounding rules may produce a different quote.

How to use the calculator and PDF

Open the FD Calculator and enter values that match your actual question. Read the labels and units before adjusting a number. The result, chart and schedule use one shared calculation engine. Change one assumption at a time so the effect remains understandable. Check the methodology notes and save a report only after confirming the inputs. The optional name and purpose label personalise the document; they are not required to use the tool. Keep the report with the source records and revisit it when the facts or goal change.

Formula and assumptions

Cumulative maturity = P × (1 + annual rate / m)^(m × years). The payout illustration uses principal × annual rate × years without reinvestment.
